The Department runs the following programs:

Bachelor of Arts in English
This is a four years program to be completed in four academic years with a number of courses on English language and literature for each year. Students are awarded the honours degree of Bachelor of Arts on successful completion of the courses through exams held at the end of each academic year.

Master of Arts in English
This is a one year course spanning just one academic year. Students have the option of choosing from a number of alternative courses on English language, contemporary English literature and post-colonial literature in English. Deserving students are allowed to carry out research work and write dissertation in lieu of optional courses under the supervision of a senior faculty member of the department.

M. Phil in English
To carry out research work in a field of English language or literature in pursuit of an M. Phil. degree, a proposal along with recommendation from the supervisor has to be submitted for the approval of the departmental Academic Committee. The researcher is supposed to complete the work within two years under the supervision of the designated supervisor/supervisors.

Ph. D. in English
The procedure for a Ph. D. degree is same as that for M. Phil. with the exception that the researcher will be given a longer time, three years extendable in special circumstances up to six years, to complete the work.

Admission

Bachelor of Arts:
The department admits eighty students to the first year of the program each year. Selection for admission is made on the basis of the students' performance in the admission test arranged by the central admission committee of the university. The university announces the minimum requisite qualifications and other particulars regarding admission through newspaper circulations each year.

Master of Arts:
Regular students who have successfully completed their B.A. degree from the department are automatically selected for admission into this program.

M. Phil. & Ph. D:
The announcement inviting proposal for research work under these programs is given by the university authority each year usually in the beginning of every calendar year. Not only the students of the department but also students from other universities meeting the criteria can avail themselves of these programs.
