Introduction
The Department of Social Work was initially started as a college of Social work under the affiliation of University of Rajshahi in 1964. It was then located within a tin roofed building. At present the Department is located at the ground floor of the second Arts Building viz. Momtazuddin Kala Bhaban. The college of Social Work was started under a ‘special officer’ professor Badaruddin Umar. The first Principal of the College was Dr. A. Mazid Khan; later on he was an Education, Planning and Religion minister of Bangladesh. The next principals were late Dr. A.B.M. Saifullah (1967) and Professor A.S.M. Nurul Islam (1969).
In1969 the Department of Social Work was jointly started as the Department of Social Work and Sociology under the headship of Professor Fazlur Rashid Khan.
In 1972 the Department of Social Work was evolved as a separate and independent department under the faculty of Arts. Late Mr. Kazi Habibul Hossain was the first head of the Department of Social Work and the second head was Professor A.S.M. Nurul Islam (1973).
From 1973 to 2004, the Department was headed by 14 Chairmen. The first chairman was Dr. Muhammad Ali Akbar and the present Chairman is Mr. Md. Ashrafuzzaman.

There are provisions for monthly scholarship of Tk. 1500 for M. Phil students and Tk. 2000 for Ph.D. students.

Students are encouraged to take part in extra curriculum activities such as sports, debates, cultural functions, study tours etc. within and outside Bangladesh.
