In view of the tremendous development of research on biological science in advanced countries and under the pressing demand of coordinated research of different aspets of biological fields, the National Planning Commission, people's Republic of Bangladesh feels it necessary to establish the Institute of Biological Sciences to promote and provide facilities of higher studies and coordinated researches on biological fields under University of Rajshahi.

Objectives:

• To develop Biological organisms, systems and processes for utilization in Food and Agriculture, Health and Medicine, Industry and Energy through scientific researches.
• To develop research activities in modern biological sciences in cooperation with other departments of the University.
• To apply science and technology for socio-economic development of the country and to undertake research projects in cooperation with public and private organizations.
• To promote and provide facilities for advanced studies and research on Biological science for M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees.

Field of Research

The following pertinent field of researches are decided to be undertaken:

a) Flora and Faunal Survey:
Step by step systematic survey of plants and animal of Bangladesh to promote knowledge and awareness among the workers.

b) Molecular Biology:
Genetical Engineering and Biotechnology, Tissue Culture, Protein and Enzyme Chemistry to develop technical uplift towards modern research on Agriculture and Medicine.

c) Environment & Pollution:
Aquaculture, Limnology, Pollution and Environmental Biology to conduct research on food, agriculture and health.

d) Crop Protection:
Integrated pest management, Plant Pathology, Nematology, Insect Pathology, Invertebrate and Vertebrate Pests Control and Toxicology to promote the advanced research on agriculture of Bangladesh.

e) Clinical Research:
Clinical Pathology, Genetics, Microbiology and Parasitology.

f) Breeding and Genetics:
Plant breeding & Cytogenetics and Animal Breeding & Genetics to promote upliftment of Food, Agriculture and Sericulture of Bangladesh.
