(APE) goes back to mid sixties when an
urgent need to establish a department of Applied Physics and Electronics was
felt. As a matter of fact APE began its journey in 1966 with few teaching
staff and some 20 post graduate students under the leadership of the late
Prof. M. R. Sarkar ( later became the Vice-Chancellor of this University).
Undergraduate honours course was introduced in 1972. As the only other
center of the Applied Physics and Electronics in the country, APE gradually
rose to become a full-fledged and prestigious center of excellence. Today
APE has a team of highly qualified and professionally well experienced
academic members who are actively engaged in research within and outside the
country. APE boasts of having close research links with the institutions of
countries like Sweden, China and Vietnam. Students entering APE leave with
self-confidence of the subject to meet any challenges demanded by their
jobs. In fact employment opportunities of APE are better than any other
department of the University. The prestige of a degree often opens the first
door to interviews for jobs in services related to Computer,
Communication, Defense, Civil Aviation, Remote sensing, GSB, Petrobangla, Radio, TVand other
R & D centers etc.

COMPUTER CENTER:
APE boasts of having a computer center of its own. Computing facilities
are recently upgraded to a full-fledged center serving the needs of students
and academic staff. Present facilities include around 35 Computers, LAN and
Internet Browsing. There are many opportunities to enhance computing skills.
LIBRARY:
APE has a departmental library of its own. The library is constantly
being updated with reference books of various disciplines and other reading
materials. There also exists a Rental Library since 1989 where books are
rented to students against a nominal fee. The fund collected in this way
used to purchase new books each year. At present the rental library has a
modest collection of about 1200 volumes.
WORKSHOP:
APE has a well-equipped workshop that provides students to learn
repairing and maintenance of electronic, electrical and mechanical
instruments and equipments under the guidance of qualified instrument
engineers.
The undergraduate courses are mainly basic physics with strong emphasis
on electronics. The post-graduate courses include TV and Radio Engineering,
Communication engineering, Computer Technology, Digital and
Microelectronics, Industrial Electronics, Solid State Physics, Geophysics,
Solar Energy Physics, Thin Film Physics, Biophysics and Medical
Instrumentation. Specialization is offered in some of the above branches.
M. Phil and Ph. D. works are in full swing on the following fields.
1. Computer (Hardware and Software)
2. Dielectric and Thermal Properties of Oxides and Nitrides
3. ESR Studies
4. Geophysics
5. Reliability Engineering
6. Signal Processing
7. Superconductivity
8. Thin Film Physics (metal, semiconductor, dielectric, cermet etc.)
