Department of Statistics

Introduction

The Department of Statistics is one of the oldest departments in the University of Rajshahi. The department started functioning in 1961 with only three teachers. Professor K.M. Hossain was the first head of the department. The department set out its academic activity with a batch of 15 students admitted into M.A./M.Sc. previous class in 1961-62 session. Three year Honours courses were introduced form 1962-63 session. Courses in both theoretical and applied statistics are taught at the under graduate and graduate levels. Integrated Honours courses were introduced from the academic year 1992-93. There is a Committee of Courses and Studies which meets once a year to revise and update syllabuses/courses of different classes.

Since its establishment, the department has evolved steadily. The department offers good teaching and research facilities,. At present there are 24 teachers and 20 office staff. The present enrolment of the student in the undergraduate and graduate classes is about 500. The department has its won seminar library with a quite good number of text books, journals and scientific literature. A Computer Unit was established in the department in 1990. It is equipped with 50 personal computers of various models and displaying colour . Both the teachers and taught of this department have been using these computers. Occasionally teachers of other departments are allowed computer facilities for their research works. As many as four courses on computer are offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Apart from offering B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. degrees in statistics, the department also conducts research for higher studies leading to M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. The research works have been concentrated mainly in the area of Population Problems, Econometrics, Bio-statistics, Bayesian Inference, Regression Diagnostics, Sample Re-use techniques, Robust Statistics, Industrial Statistics, Linear programming and Statistical Inference.
The Department has organized an association of its own, named “Parisankhan Samity”. The departmental Chairman is an ex-officio chairman of the Parisankhan Samity. The aims of this Samity are to uphold the academic interests of the department, to organize indoor games, reception party for the new students, farewell party of the outgoing students and bring out a magazine annually. The department holds seminar/conferences from time to time. Occasionally distinguish foreign scholars visit the department and give seminar talks.
